What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a Self-defense martial art and combat sport based on grappling and submission holds. It focuses on the skill of taking an opponent to the ground, controlling one's opponent, gaining a dominant position and using a number of techniques to force them into submission via joint locks or chokeholds.
BJJ revolves around the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger, heavier opponent by using leverage and weight distribution, taking the fight to the ground and using a number of holds and submissions to defeat them. BJJ training can be used for sport grappling and in self-defence situations. Sparring, commonly referred to as "rolling" within the BJJ community, and live drilling plays a major role in training and the practitioner's development. BJJ can also be used as a method of promoting physical fitness, building character, and as a way of life.
Micheal Cates
Head Instructor
Micheal Cates retired from the US Marines after 21 years, and has lived on Okinawa for over 17 years. Micheal has been training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu since 2010 and the last few years has been teaching techniques in both English and Japanese here on Okinawa. He earned his Black Belt from Professor Ricardo Guimaraes his original instructor while still on active duty. In September of 2021 he was awarded his first degree from Ricardo as well.

He also holds a First Degree Black Belt in Kodokan Judo.

I have traveled all over the world and trained in many locations. I have seen many different jiu jitsu schools and witnessed different styles brazilian jiu jitsu instruction . I believe that Okinawa needs is a consistent, clean, family friendly, professional Brazilian jiu jitsu gym.

Our goal is to provide a place that feels safe, friendly and clean for everyone to learn and enjoy Brazilian Jiu Jitsu! Every time you come to the Gym, you will be welcomed like family and always treated with respect. we also want to provide a place for the military on island and Okinawans of Uruma to socialize and get to know each other better!
